Monitor replacement guarantee keeps patient information close at hand.

Challenge
Like most modern health care facilities, The Methodist Hospital in Houston relies on the up-time of their computer systems. A variety of monitor-styles are critical components-from flat screens to large, high-resolution CRTs. ViewSonic worked with a local reseller to devise a custom replacement guarantee under the Express Exchange program that made it possible for the staff to keep their minds on patient health and off of technology.

Solution
  • The Methodist Hospital relies on thousands of monitors to keep personnel in touch with patient records, scheduling, and a host of other issues critical to providing top-notch care and life-saving services.

As part of the Express Exchange program the reseller has been able to keep a buffer of replacement monitors close at hand, minimizing down time and lowering service costs.
Results
Hardware costs were little changed when The Methodist Hospital implemented ViewSonic monitors, and service costs were cut by having the ability to do it themselves. In addition, downtime was slashed by having replacements nearby.

The customer
The Methodist Hospital is a nonprofit health care organization based in Houston, Texas. The main facility, the Texas Medical Center in Houston, maintains 1000 licensed beds, 59 operating rooms, and provides the services of more than 1700 physicians. In 1996, The Methodist Hospital system was established to extend health services beyond the main Texas Medical Center and into communities throughout Houston. Its international physician referral network - with information centers in Guatemala City and Mexico City and affiliations with hospitals spanning four continents - has extended the hospital's reach into the world community as well.

The challenge
Several thousand personnel at The Methodist Hospital rely on computers to stay connected to key hospital information. That includes office personnel such as management and HR, but also space-conscious areas like nursing stations, patient check-in through the facilities, and video surgery conferencing with distant hospital partners. With such high volumes and special requirements, The Methodist Hospital needed a customized solution that NetView was unable to provide.

The solution
NetView brokered a three-year on-site ViewSonic Express Exchange warranty for thousands of ViewSonic monitors, including slim plasma monitors where high resolution was required within cramped spaces. At no extra cost the warranty is organized around an innovative 48-hour replacement guarantee that was tailored to the hospital's unique service requirements. When a unit goes down, replacements are already in the possession of the reseller, NetView Technologies, so The Methodist Hospital doesn't have to wait several days or more for shipments to arrive.

The results
The program now places approximately 750 monitors a year in The Methodist Hospital. According to purchasing manager at The Methodist Hospital, "The results were less down time and fewer returns of monitors back to the shipper. It's hard to put a monetary value on that, but there is a human value. Basically half the monitors are in the nurse stations for reviewing patient data." It turns out there's a monetary payoff as well. The Express Exchange replacement system allows local IT personnel to handle the monitor changeovers themselves, saving money that previously was spent for on-site service.
