City Planning Case Study

Oklahoma City Planners increase productivity with ViewSonic LCDs.

"I'm able to do more because they (the LCDs) work in concert with each other. I'm able to work with many different packages at one time and it's easier to move data between them."
– Jerry Hunter, City of Oklahoma City Planning

Challenge
The City of Oklahoma City Planning Department is overseeing a building boom in one of the country's most expansive cities. However planner and graphics expert Jerry Hunter was using CRT monitors with poor brightness and resolution, resulting in low productivity and a high incidence of eye strain and discomfort.

Solution
Oklahoma City purchased a pair of ViewSonic VP191 LCD displays that allowed Hunter to have a larger amount of useful work area and better clarity for moving complex visual data between programs.

Results
Hunter can complete projects more quickly and work further into the day than previously. Since glare from natural light sources is less of a factor for the LCDs, Hunter can also work in a more enjoyable and productive work environment.

The customer
Geographically speaking, the City of Oklahoma City is one of the largest in the country, spreading a metro population of 1.4 million over 620 square miles and parts of four counties. Jerry Hunter is a member of the city's Planning Department who provides geographic information systems (GIS), schemata, and other documents required for city planning. His department has been busy implementing $400 million in public works, including a new baseball park, library, and riverfront improvements, and are about to embark on a similar initiative for area schools.

The challenge
Jerry Hunter spends his days in a variety of graphics packages, including Photoshop, AutoCAD, and a variety of GIS and mapping applications. Trouble is that he had been working on a pair of 21 inch CRT monitors that were difficult to view clearly without shutting the office away from natural light. This promoted eye strain which caused headaches and created a negative work environment. The CRTs were also difficult to integrate, making it a chore to move data between applications, something Hunter has to do almost constantly.

The solution

In the summer of 2004 the Oklahoma City Planning Department sought a solution from Sunbelt Data, which prescribed a pair of ViewSonic VP191 LCD monitors. "I really like them," Hunter says. "I'm able to do more because they work with many different packages at one time and it's easier to move data between them." With the multiple monitor set-up and the graphics card, Hunter is able to use the displays as two halves of one giant screen, or separately to make side-by-side comparisons, which is useful when he's looking for visual disparities between two data sources.

The results
Hunter's productivity has increased, and the frequency of day-ending headaches resulting from CRT eyestrains has plummeted. He can complete projects quicker and work further into the day than previously. And best of all, he can leave the blinds open and enjoy an airy, well-lit work environment without worrying about it having a negative impact of his ability to see fine lines and gradients of color on his screen.
